Formerly known as the Ellice Islands, Tuvalu is a group of atolls lying south of the equator in the western Pacific Ocean, south of Kiribati and north of the Fiji Islands. It joined the Commonwealth in 1978.

At the 2002 Games in Manchester two table tennis players represented the nation and at the 2010 Games in Delhi three athletes took part in the discus, shot putt and weighlifting events. In 2014, Tuvalu's athletes participated in Table Tennis and Weightlifting.

The Tuvalu Amateur Sports Association achieved National Olympic Committee status on the 6th July 2007 at the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) 119th IOC Session in Guatemala City.

The Tuvalu National Olympic Committee is responsible for organising participation in both the Commonwealth Games and the Commonwealth Youth Games.
