A member of the Commonwealth since 1968, the small oval shaped western Pacific island of Nauru began its Commonwealth Games campaign at the 1990 Games held in Auckland, winning one gold and two silver medals in the weightlifting.

More weightlifting medals followed again in successive Games, 1994 and 1998, mostly due to the elite weightlifting centre in Nauru which came into being in 1994. Manchester in 2002 saw Nauru pick up 15 medals in weightlifting, a truly remarkable feat for an island that covers no more than 22 sq kms. A silver and bronze medal followed at the 2006 Games in Melbourne; gold again was worn following weightlifting success in the Mens 77kg at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi; and Nauru brought home silver in Mens 105kg at Glasgow 2014. To date, they have won an incredible 29 medals – all in the same sport.

The Nauru Olympic Committee is responsible for organising the island's participation in the Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth Youth Games.
