The Republic of Mozambique joined the Commonwealth in 1995, a former Portuguese territory they made their debut in the 1998 Commonwealth Games which were held in Kuala Lumpur.

This south-east African nation took gold and silver on their debut in Kuala Lumpur via the women's 800m track final. The legendary Maria Mutola claiming the first prize in Malaysia, a feat she repeated in the 2002 Manchester Games (pictured). At the Melbourne Games in 2006 she took a bronze in the same event. At the 2014 Games in Glasgow Mozambique matched their inaugural medal haul in KL, this time winning two medals in T12 Women’s para-athletics (Silver) and 60k Women’s Boxing.

Established in 1979, the Mozambique National Olympic Committee is responsible for the country's participation at the Commonwealth Games and in the Commonwealth Youth Games.
