The Republic of Mauritius, lying off the south east coast of Africa and east of Madagascar, joined the Commonwealth in 1968 and formed a National Olympic Committee in 1972.

This island country in the Indian Ocean made it's debut in the Commonwealth Games in 1958 in Cardiff, Wales but had to wait until the Kuala Lumpur 1998 Games for it's first medals, all of which came in boxing. Medal success followed in Melbourne in 2006 with three silvers, two in boxing and one on the running track. Glasgow in 2014 yielded a further two medals; a silver in boxing and a bronze in judo.

The Mauritius National Olympic Committee is responsible for the island's participation in the Commonwealth Games and the Commonwealth Youth Games.
